Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) · IATA: HDS · Hoedspruit, Limpopo · Private reserve gateway

Hoedspruit Airport Guide 2026: Eastgate Airport (HDS)

The gateway airport for Sabi Sand, Timbavati, and the Greater Kruger private reserves. Smaller and less connected than Nelspruit — but if your lodge is on the western boundary, this is the airport that saves you 2 hours of road transfer.

⚠ Manage your expectations: Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport is a small regional facility. It has basic waiting areas, limited seating, no lounge, and minimal food options. It is not OR Tambo. Pack snacks and expect a basic experience — the airport's value is purely its location relative to the western reserves, not its amenities.

Airlines and Routes from Hoedspruit (HDS)

Three carriers now serve HDS. Airlink flies from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) and Cape Town; CemAir flies from Johannesburg plus a direct George–Hoedspruit service launched in May 2026 (three flights a week, the Garden Route’s first nonstop Kruger link); and FlySafair opened Cape Town–Hoedspruit on 2 October 2025, running three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with fares from around R1,570 one way. That FlySafair service is the first low-cost option ever offered on a Hoedspruit route — it meaningfully changes the fare picture from Cape Town, though Johannesburg–Hoedspruit remains full-service only and still prices above comparable Nelspruit fares.

RouteAirlineFlight timeTypical fare
Johannesburg (JNB) → HoedspruitAirlink~55 minR1,200–R3,000
George (GRJ) → HoedspruitCemAir~2 hours (3x weekly)From ~R4,800
Cape Town (CPT) → HoedspruitAirlink, FlySafair~2h 30min (direct)From ~R1,570 (FlySafair)
Durban (DUR) → HoedspruitAirlinkvia JNB (~3h total)R1,300–R3,200
💰 Cost vs convenience: The premium over Nelspruit is real — typically R300–R800 more per leg. Whether that's worth it depends purely on where your lodge is. If you're staying in Sabi Sand, that premium saves you 1.5–2 hours of road transfer each way, which on a 3-night trip is significant.

Lodge Transfers from HDS

Most guests flying into Hoedspruit are collected by their lodge. This is standard practice for the private western reserves — your lodge rate almost always includes airport transfers from HDS. Confirm this with your lodge before booking your flights.

If your lodge does not include transfers, options are:

⚠ Do not rely on Uber at Hoedspruit. Uber availability is extremely limited in Hoedspruit. Arrange your transfer before you land. Being stranded at this small airport without a pre-arranged ride is a serious inconvenience.

Car Hire at Hoedspruit Airport

Car hire at HDS is very limited. It's not a full-service car hire hub like Nelspruit or Cape Town. Avis sometimes has availability but it must be confirmed well in advance — call them directly rather than assuming online availability is accurate.

For most private reserve guests, car hire is unnecessary — your lodge handles all your transport within the reserve. If you plan to self-drive, Nelspruit (MQP) is a far better base for car hire.

Airlink, CemAir and FlySafair serve HDS. Airlink flies from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) and Cape Town; CemAir flies from Johannesburg and — since May 2026 — direct from George; FlySafair flies from Cape Town three times a week, the airport’s first low-cost service.

Is Hoedspruit or Nelspruit better for Kruger?

For private western reserves (Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Klaserie) — Hoedspruit saves significant transfer time. For the main SANParks camps and southern Kruger self-drive — Nelspruit wins on price, car hire availability, and road access to the southern gates.
