How pensioners actually pay less for flights in South Africa
1. Book the SAA senior fare properly
The senior fare only appears if you select the right passenger type. On flysaa.com, open "Cabin and Passenger Selection," choose Senior Citizens (60+ years), and enter the number of senior passengers before searching. The discounted fares then load automatically. Booking as a standard adult and asking for the discount later does not work.
2. Use the loyalty programmes you may already have
Many South African retirees already hold Discovery Health or Sanlam retirement products without realising the flight benefits attached:
Discovery Vitality: up to 75% off SAA and FlySafair for top-status members with Vitality Money. Even Bronze status typically earns a meaningful discount.
Sanlam Reality: up to 30% off FlySafair, booked through the Reality member portal.
Bank programmes: some bank rewards schemes (e.g. eBucks) can be redeemed against flights, effectively discounting fares further.
3. Fly when pensioners can — midweek and off-peak
Retirees have the one advantage working travellers don't: schedule freedom. Tuesday and Wednesday departures on domestic trunk routes are consistently the cheapest of the week, and flying in February, May or August avoids school-holiday surges entirely. 4. Compare across all airlines before assuming SAA wins
An SAA senior fare is not automatically cheaper than a FlySafair standard fare on the same route. On Johannesburg–Cape Town, FlySafair's early-booking fares frequently undercut SAA's senior price. Always compare the final ZAR total — including baggage — before booking.

The loyalty route: what “up to 75% off” actually means
For most South African pensioners, the largest realistic saving does not come from an age-based
fare at all — it comes from a loyalty programme you may already be paying for. But the headline
percentages on those programmes are ceilings, not typical outcomes, and the conditions attached to
them change the maths considerably. Here is what the published terms actually say, checked against
the programme documentation in August 2026.
Discovery Vitality Travel
Vitality advertises 10% to 75% off local flights, booked through the Vitality Travel platform,
with Airlink, CemAir, FlySafair, LIFT and SAA as partner airlines. The number you personally get is
not a choice — it is calculated from your Discovery Bank product, your Vitality Money status,
your Vitality Health checks where applicable, and your qualifying card spend. The 75% figure sits at
the very top of that range. Treat it as the maximum a member can reach, not the discount you should
expect to see.
Four conditions materially reduce what lands in your pocket:

Airport taxes are excluded from the discount entirely. On a cheap domestic hop, taxes are a
meaningful slice of the total — so a headline percentage never applies to the full price
you pay.
Capped at R7,500 of discountable fare, per person, per local flight
Above that ceiling the discount stops applying. Rarely a constraint on a domestic economy
seat; relevant if you are booking premium cabins.
Six one-way (or three return) local flights per calendar year
After that allowance is used, you drop to a flat 10% for the remainder of the year. If you
fly to see family several times a year, plan which trips get the good rate.
Variable booking fee on local flights since 1 January 2026
The fee is charged per traveller and scales with how far ahead of travel you book. It is not
included in the discounted base fare, so it comes off the top of whatever you saved.
The discount is also for leisure travel — the terms exclude business trips. And in May 2026,
News24 ran an independent test of the entry-level 10% domestic discount against the airlines’
own websites. Their finding was that the saving at checkout was usually considerably smaller than the
headline suggested, and that on some routes the fare through the platform came out higher than booking
the airline direct. That is not a reason to dismiss the benefit — members at higher discount
tiers can do genuinely well — but it is a firm reason to price-check rather than assume.
Sanlam Reality
Sanlam Reality’s local flight benefit is with FlySafair, and the programme’s own
benefit page states members can save as much as 30% on local flights. Like Vitality, the figure is
tier-dependent: what you receive follows your membership option and status, not the advertised
maximum. Bookings run through the Reality benefit link into the FlySafair website, and your FlySafair
profile must be linked to your Reality membership before the discounted fares appear.
Two practical warnings from the programme terms. Changing a booking made on the benefit costs an
administration fee and can forfeit the discounted fare entirely — so this is a route for trips
you are confident about, not provisional dates. And Reality’s separate Emirates benefit is a
different product with its own rules: it sits on specific membership tiers, applies to economy class,
and is calculated on the flight portion of the airfare rather than the taxes.
The honest comparison. If you already hold Discovery Bank products and maintain
your Vitality status, Vitality Travel is likely to beat anything age-based in the South African
market. If you hold Sanlam Reality and fly FlySafair, that benefit is simpler to use and easier to
predict. If you hold neither, joining a programme purely to discount two flights a year almost
never pays for itself once the monthly cost is counted. Do that arithmetic before you sign up for
anything.
Check it in ninety seconds before you commit
Whatever programme you use, run this test on the exact flight you want:
Price the flight on the airline’s own website first and write down the total
payable — not the base fare.
Price the same flight, same date, same time, through the loyalty platform.
Add any booking or service fee the platform charges to its total.
Compare the two totals. Not the percentages — the rands you actually hand over.
If the loyalty route wins, take it. If it does not, book direct and keep your flight allowance for
a trip where the discount lands harder. Percentages are marketing; totals are what leaves your
account.
